THE WOODS

The ‘Loring Woods’ and ‘Mississippi Woods’ will have intensive greening at the north and south ends. Underground conditions and available sunlight mean more trees can be planted. The ‘Woods’ are envisioned as green links with more park-like settings and amenities to strengthen the connection to the green hubs of Loring Park and the Mississippi Riverfront.

THE GROVES

The Groves will include greenery and seasonality with species that are native to Minnesota and add biodiversity to the corridor. ‘South Groves’ will include a ‘Reading Room’ adjacent to the YWCA between 11th and 12th and incorporate a curvilinear bench and an over-scaled reading lamp. The ‘North Groves,’ will contain a Nice Ride station, new multi-use transit shelters integrated with outdoor seating.

THE CENTER

Located in the heart of the central business district, between 8th and 6th streets, ‘The Center’ is the most urban and intense area of the 1-mile corridor. The design for ‘The Center’ was inspired by Minneapolis itself – a city that celebrates light, art and the four seasons. It will feature two walks – an Art Walk and a Light Walk – where people can gather and participate in a variety of informal or programmed events, festivals, performances and markets throughout the year.

The ‘Light Walk’ is comprised of a pedestrian-scaled trellis which serves as an armature for a 2-block-long overhead light installation constructed out of a series of mirrored fins and programmable LED lights. The ‘Art Walk’ is defined by an alternating row of stately trees and light masts combined with a series of unique lanterns that will be suspended between 8th and 6th streets.
